Persistent chat rooms- turning off self created chat rooms. Admin only s

Hi, we have a number of persistent chat rooms which users have created themselves however I've been asked to turn this feature off so chat rooms can only be created via service desk / admins 

I fear is if I turn off the feature what would happen to the existing self created chat rooms- has any done this?

Just to add, we have other IM&P across our region and it seems since this self created feature is on, users on the other IM&P systems have this option available and so the other regions do not want this feature and so asking us to turn it off
