I'm from Bangladesh. In our country, government has some restrictions on voice and video traffics over internet, and all TCP/UDP ports related to voice and video traffics are blocked at the IIG (International Internet Gateway) level. Whoever wants to use the service has to submit a formal application requesting permission for opening those ports against source and destination IPs. I have a few questions:
1. We use Skype everyday. How come we do video calls through Skype with no blocking and our video calls from Telepresence is blocked? I've searched for the Skype port requirements and it has the following requirements:
- 443/TCP.
- 3478-3481/UDP.
- 49152-65535/UDP + TCP
Someone has told me that Skype uses these ports but all traffic are tunneled through 80/443, which are open, that's why we have no issues with video calls from Skype. Can anyone confirm?
2. Similarly, there is an even bigger range of ports required for WebEx. But we join WebEx meetings everyday. Does WebEx work in a similar manner like Skype?
3. Most important question: Currently we're about to deploy Jabber at client's site. Does Jabber require specific ports to be open like Telepresence? Or does it use some sort of tunneling mechanism like Skype and we don't need additional permission?
You can tell from my question that I'm new to collaboration and I'm trying to figure out all these. Please help me understand what's going on here.
