Core Issue
The BARS backup fails while it writes on the tape drive with these errors on the log:
- Can't open tape
- Could not build archive succesfully
The back up works fine if it is taken on a Network Location or on the local drive.
Resolution
One of the reason this issue occurs is because the removable storage devices are disabled by default on all Cisco CallManager Installations. In order to resolve this issue, use the Microsoft Backup Utility for things such as Formats, Catalogs, Ejects, and so forth. BARS does not control the Tape Device, but can Read/Write to the Tape Drive.
Enable Removable Storage Services. In order to do this, choose Start > Run > Services.MSC and locate Removable Storage Service. Set this to automatic and start the service.
Then choose Start > Program Files > Accessories > System Tools > Backup.
If this is not there, the executable is located at C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\NTBACKUP.EXE. For specific questions about how to use MS Backup for Catalogs, Formats, Erases, and so forth, refer to the Help Utility provided by Microsoft.
Refer to Release Notes for Cisco IP Telephony Backup and Restore System (BARS), Version 4.0 (2) for more information on BARS.
