What has Polycom recently introduced with TIP interoperability?

Polycom enables new collaboration capabilities for Polycom and Cisco TelePresence™ System (CTS) customers with support for the Telepresence Interoperability Protocol (TIP). Polycom introduced native TIP implementation on Polycom HDX® , Polycom OTX® and Polycom RPX® systems in June 2011 and added TIP support on Polycom ATX® systems in October 2011. Polycom introduced native TIP support on the Polycom RealPresence™ Platform, specifically the Polycom RMX® V7.6 in October 2011, adding broader support for CTS across Polycom solutions. The Polycom DMA® also introduced capabilities related to dialing plans, load balancing, and resiliency that can help improve performance.

Which Polycom solutions support TIP and which Cisco TelePresence Systems does Polycom work with?

Support for TIP V7 (the most current version, published July 2010) is available across our RealPresence Room, Immersive, and Platform solutions. This allows for native interoperability with Cisco TelePresence Systems (CTS). Specifically, Polycom products and versions that support TIP are:

  • Polycom HDX 9006, Polycom HDX 8000 HD (HW rev B), Polycom HDX 7000 HD (HW Rev C) and HDX 4500, each running version 3.0 (July 2011) or the latest HDX V3.0.3 (October 2011)
  • Polycom RealPresence Immersive: Polycom OTX and Polycom RPX—introduced TIP support in June 2011 on ITP V3.0.2 and support for TIP on Polycom ATX was added to ITP V3.0.3 in October 2011
  • Polycom RealPresence Platform: Polycom RMX V7.6,
Polycom Multipoint Layout Application (MLA) v3.0.3 (free software required for RMX calls with CTS systems)
  • Polycom DMA V4.0—supports “passing through TIP calls”
  • Cisco solution and release compatibility can be found in the Polycom UC for Cisco Unified Communications Manager Deployment Guide available on www.polycom.com/cisco

With Polycom’s introduction of TIP support on the Polycom RealPresence Platform via the Polycom RMX, to connect to a Polycom RMX system with continuous presence, an RMX meeting room is used as a meeting place for the Cisco and Polycom equipment. In addition to the RMX bridge, a Polycom MLA software tool is needed to control the continuous presence ITP experience for the call and as with all telepresence calls on the RMX, a telepresence license is required if it is not already present. There is no software license needed for TIP support on the Polycom RMX. TIP is only supported on the MPMx cards of RMX--not the MPM & MPM+ cards. If the RMX is equipped with the MPMx cards shipping with the Polycom RMX since July 2010, or if the customer has upgraded the RMX with MPMx cards, TIP support is included free with the update to the latest software release V7.6.

Which high definition (HD) video resolutions does Polycom support in calls with CTS systems?

Polycom supports 1080p 30fps in point-to-point calls between Polycom HDX or Polycom Immersive TelePresence systems (OTX, RPX, ATX) and CTS. In multipoint TIP-based calls, the RMX supports up to 720p 30fps. Support for 1080p with TIP-based calls is planned for a future release.

Does Polycom support “segment switching” in TIP?

Segment switching is supported by Polycom immersive telepresence systems supporting TIP. Segment switching is not supported in the Polycom RMX, which instead, supports continuous presence in conjunction with the MLA.
