create own custom directory and host it in a separate

I just want to create my own custom directory and need to host it in separately.

i just want to know is how can i build my custom server.

     1. if i need any API or specific parameters ?

     2.can i communicate my server and phone to search or retrieve contacts using HTTP request and responses ?

Actually i dont know exactly how the phone and server communicate (i mean dont know the protocols or port numbers)

could you please provide me a guidance or give some helpful informations regarding this its really grateful.
