looping through xml file

I have an xml file that list a number of business states, i.e, major outage , minor outage or normal. when a user calls in the script checks the xml file for the "current_state" and will play a prompt depending on that state, this works fine.

if I want to enter two states in the xml file. i.e there could be a major and minor outage, so I need the script to loop throught the xml file and check all states and play prompts for each state it finds.- I am having trouble doing this,

any tips would be great
