Thank you all for taking the time to provide feedback!

This survey was initiated as a follow-up to the Sustainability Keynote by Koen Bastiaens and Saumya Dubey at Automation Developer Days in Stockholm in May 2022. Our goal was to better understand your view on sustainability and automation. We wanted to ask 3 very basic questions to learn how important sustainability is to the community.

The result was very clear despite the small number of respondents.

  • Sustainability is an important and relevant topic to discuss and collaborate on.
    • 6 out of 10 already use automation to drive sustainability and 3 out of 10 want to know more.
    • 9 out of 10 want to collaborate with us to develop different use cases.
  • The single most popular use case is not unexpectedly about optimizing and reducing power consumption. Here, there are probably several different approaches and great potential for innovation.

To continue the discussion we challenge you to share your experience and invite the community to the discussion and problem-solving. Let us know how we can facilitate workshops or similar.

Interesting to see the response and poll of the results. Looking forward to more discussions and your ideas on how we can save power consumption in our data centers and networking infrastructure.

There are two major questions we are focusing on for now,
a. How can we bring a reduction in scope 2 and 3 emissions by using automation in networking and
b. How can we consciously add 'sustainability' as an architectural pillar while designing solutions and operation pipelines?

During the workshop as well, power consumption was the major usecase focus, sharing some ideas discussed here:

1. Create an efficient operation pipeline and take back programs to handle legacy and out-of-service hardware and automate the process of product reuse and recycling. This also includes migrating to energy-efficient devices.
2. Identify and Stop/adjust the resources and services, not in use. This has a direct impact on energy usage and power consumption
  • Eg: Shut down Port, Device not in use.
  • Automated Capacity Management
  • Cell Site Migration
  • Optimizing power using traffic policies.
3. Efficient methods of data center cooling
4. Track the metrics that impact power consumption and adjust using automation as required. Telemetry analysis of where/what is impacting the power consumption

How are you reducing power consumption in your infrastructure today? Post your thoughts and ideas in the comments
