Transport Slice Automation Design and Deploy with CNC/NSO

Automation Developer Days US, Dec 6, 2023

Abstract:
5G slicing technology offers the promise to provide next-generation services to consumers and enterprise customers, along with driving new revenue streams for service providers. This of course assumes the service provider can massively automate the configuration complexity for the many use cases envisioned for the required transport network, all while continuing to provide the expected SLA/SLE slice guarantees. With the use of declarative YANG-modeled slice service APIs (as defined by the IETF Network Slice YANG model) and intent-based service orchestration, we will describe how to modularize and tackle this complex problem for transport slicing. This slicing model can simplify the transport network configuration complexities through a predefined service provider–delivered slicing service catalog, which the transport orchestration system uses to map the user intent into the device-level primitives required to realize the slice service (such as SR-TE, QoS, and BGP-based VPNs). By leveraging well-defined domain-level primitives and hierarchically layered automation principles with network-wide commit capabilities, transport slice provisioning can become fairly cookie-cutter, supporting many use cases that can turn quickly into revenue-generating services.

Speaker: John Mullooly, Distinguished Sales Architect, Cisco

John Mullooly is a Distinguished Architect at Cisco Systems, joining in 1998 with focus on the Service Provider market. He is a recognized and accomplished technology leader with 35+ years of experience in computer/IP network design, deployment, and consulting to large SPs (AT&T, etc.) and Enterprise customers. He has extensive technical expertise in Network Design, IP Routing, MPLS/SR, L3/L2 VPNs, Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), NFV Orchestration (NFVO), OpenStack, Cloud Networking, Kubernetes, NETCONF/YANG and Service Automation. He is a leading contributor to Cisco’s Network Slicing architectural vision, based on multi-domain and intent-based service-modeled principles, and has contributed to the IETF’s work to drive better standardization in this area. John previously held senior technology roles at AT&T Bell Labs and AT&T Solutions. He has obtained BS/MS degrees in Electrical Engineering, and various industry certifications including multiple CCIEs (#3659), AWS Solution Architecture, AWS Advanced Networking, and Certified Kubernetes Administration (CKA). He holds ten patents in the areas of computer networking and IP network services and is an adjunct professor in the Engineering & Technology Department at Brookdale Community College.
