Hi @SahilKhan8824

Yes you can mix M3 & F3 in the same VDC.  This is the compatibility table:

For further details, guidelines and restrictions, please read the following document:

Stay safe,

Sergiu

I am bit confused with regards to compatibility between SUP-2 and M1 & F1 line cards. i was referring to below Nexus I/O comparison matrix. In that its say M1 & F1 is compatible with SUP-2 ,however when i look at the NX-OS 8.x release notes these line cards not supported with the NX-OS 8.x. So can anyone help me clarify whether the M1 ,F1 will be supported with SUP-2 module using NX-OS 8.X or do i need to use different NX-OS version in order to support the M1 & F1 line cards ?

Hi @SahilKhan8824

SUP-2 supports M1 and F1. However, the release notes says that the NXOS version does not support anymore the EOL hardware:

Cisco Nexus 7000 Supervisor 1 modules, M1 series modules (XL and non-XL modes), FAB-1 modules, F2 series modules are not supported in Cisco NX-OS Release 8.x.

Ref: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/datacenter/nexus7000/sw/release/notes/cisco_nexus7000_release_notes_8x.html

In order words, if you still have M1, F1, F2 or SUP-1 in your chassis, and you will not be able to upgrade to 8.x

The latest train release both M1 and F1 seems to be 7.2:

Thank you Sergiu,

i am planning to upgrade our 2 Nexus 7010 switches which as 2xSUP-1 in each chassis with 4xm1 & 1xf1 line cards and NXOS version of 6.2.

I have created the following steps to upgrade SUP-2 , M1 & F1 line cards. Is there any steps i am missing ? .

Step 1: Backup switches configuration
Step 2: Backup Licenses.
Step 3: Power off switch
Step 4: Replace SUP-1
Step 5:Power on the switch
Step 6: Configure the SUP-2 with NO vdc admin
Step 7: Restore the license file
Step 8: Restore the nexus configuration.
Step 9: Poweroff the modules
Step 10:Purge the LC configuration
Step 11:Replace the line cards
Step 12:PowerOn the modules
Step 13:Unallocate M1 & F1 interface from VDC.
Step 14:Allocate M3 & F3 interface to VDC
Step 15:Restore port configuration

Hi @SahilKhan8824

Just to confirm, you are planning to change both the supervisors and line cards:

+ SUP-1 with SUP-2 (is it SUP2 or SUP2E?)

+ M1 & F1 with M3 & F3

In this case, what is the point of points 5-13? When the N7K will come up with new SUP, there will be no config anyway.

Since the h/w upgrade is so impactful, I would simply replace all SUPs and LC at the same time.

This will save a lot of time.

Stay safe,

Sergiu

Yes I would like to replace both SUP-1 with SUP-2 + M1 & F1 with M3 &F3.

With regards to Steps 5-13 ,i would like to use the existing Nexus 7010 chassis and just replace the old modules and supervisors with new ones.

I got the part where you want keep the old chassis, but my question is why replacing SUP first, then apply old config, remove interface config, deallocate interfaces, replace LC, instead of simply replace SUP&LC + apply config?

Basically, if you go with your steps, you apply a set of config lines, which you then remove and then apply again.

Thanks,

Sergiu

Will there be any issue with regards to VPC between the nexus switches if i choose to upgrade one switch with SUP-2 , M3 and F3 line cards and keep the other switch as is SUP-1, M1 and F1?

Yes. It will not work. This are the possible module combinations for vPC:
