VSM HA with vCenter HA over L3

Hi,

I am looking for answer how such a configuration would work: pair of VSM and pair of vCenter servers with HA over L3. According to vmware the redundancy is on the DNS level - hostname of the secondary vCenter server remains the same, but IP address will be different. Does VSM reconnect to secondary vCenter if it has different IP address?

Regards,

Robis

Hi Robis,

I myself am not too familiar with the inner working of VC HA, but in such a scenario, it may be worth investigating connecting your svs connection using the hostname rather than the IP.

This can be done by configuring the svs connection using "remote hostname" rather than "remote ip". This will require configuring the DNS IP address on the VSM as well but will allow the VSM to reconnect smoothly in the case of VC switchover.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Sachin

Hi Sachin,

thanks for your reply. I am aware of this option. My concern is how it works. There must be some kind of DNS caching involved in VSM. What failover times to expect? Have you seen this scenario working in practice?

Regards,

Robis

Hi Robis,

I'm checking with a few folks internally and will let you know shortly.

Thanks,

Sachin
