When you're in vpc, you still have 2 boxes managing the layer 3 (2 dataplanes) and you want to have 1 VIP for your hosts that is shared between the 2 Nexus for redundancy. Same as what you do with 2 catalyst switches (except vss) or 2 routeurs. The purpose is exactly the same.
