Legal Threats from Twitter as it Sees Meta’s Threads as Thievery

(say that 5 times fast)

AlexStevenson_1-1689252688705.jpeg

Meta’s new app Threads is aimed at taking over the social media market space currently dominated by Twitter and has already seen more that 70 million signups since its launch last Wednesday. As a result, Twitter has threatened to sue Meta, claiming Threads is a “copycat” of Twitter and that Meta has poached numerous ex-Twitter employees to work on their Threads team. Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, tweeted “competition is fine, cheating is not.”

Meta has responded, saying that no one on the Threads team is a former Twitter employee. Legal analysts have weighed in and remarked that Twitter’s legal threats are mostly baseless and that Meta has often replicated competitor apps in the past, without serious legal challenges, with the caveat that if Threads grows to eclipse Twitter in size, we could see Meta face antirust issues regarding cross-platform data use.

Threads did not launch last week in the EU as Meta grappled with strict regulations in that economic bloc.

Perhaps we could see this spat settled in the cage. As our own Paul Zimmerman has mentioned in This Week in Tech: June 29, 2023, Musk and Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg have recently been teasing us regarding their possible face-off in an MMA-style cage match!

Apple of My Eye

Apple has recently scaled back its ambitious forecasts for delivery of its Vision Pro mixed-reality headsets. Initially, they had hoped to deliver one million headsets in the 2024 launch year, but manufacturing problems have delivered a reality-check to the tech giant. Complexity of the headset design and difficulties in production have been cited as the main reasons for falling short of their vision of the product’s success.

After Apple sorts out the hardware issues….

…they need to work on the marketing and packaging as well….

Just kidding….the above two pictures are of the Apple Vision, not the Apple Vision Pro. The Apple Vision console was a clone of the famous Dactar model video game console. Inspired by the Apple company, it managed to be marketed with the Apple brand due to a lack of patent laws in Brazil in the 1980s. Source

Virgin Galactic Makes History with First Commercial Space Flight

AlexStevenson_5-1689252688726.jpeg

Virgin Galactic, the space tourism company founded by Richard Branson, has successfully completed its maiden commercial voyage to the very edge of space. The flight of the VSS Unity spacecraft took off from New Mexico and carried four passengers and two pilots on board.

The passengers paid $250,000 each for the ticket and that resulted in about four minutes of weightlessness and a view of the curvature of the Earth from an altitude of 86 kilometers; they also received astronaut wings from the Federal Aviation Administration after landing.

Virgin Galactic plans to launch regular spaceflights for paying customers in 2024 and they have already sold more than 600 tickets, with plans to re-open sales soon.
