What is Matter ?
-
Developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), Matter is a new open source IPv6-based communication protocol designed for use in the smart home and IoT space.
-
It’s designed to simplify everything about the smart home.
-
The protocol defines the application layer that will be deployed on devices, as well as the different link layers to help maintain interoperability.
-
Matter supports various networking technologies, such as Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Thread, allowing it to work seamlessly with existing and future connected devices.
-
Supported by major industry players such as Apple, Google, Amazon, and the CSA, has the potential to significantly transform the IoT landscape.
-
Will likely lead to a more cohesive and user-friendly IoT experience for consumers, as they can easily mix and match smart home devices from different manufacturers without worrying about compatibility issues.
Does Matter matter to us ?
The first Matter standard specification was published in October 2022. It's just a matter of time before we see Matter products blending into the entire store of matter in home improvement stores. It will be a matter of finding the right Matter among the matter, but with the promise of Matter protocol, to work seamlessly with existing and future connected devices, we hope it will all be worth it !
