How to connect RS485 sensor to IR829 S0 port

Hi guys,

I have a temperature sensor that supports RS-485 and requires to connect to IR829 Serial 0.

Can I directly use an ethernet cable(Cat5) to connect the sensor with s0 port, (like sensor pin 485+ 485- connect to RJ45 pin 1&2)or need a converter to transfer protocol.

Can this pinout work?  And how to check the data is received from the sensor(use show interface async 0 and check packets input)?

Could everyone give some tips or suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Nicole -

On IR829, serial port 0 can be configured for either RS232 DCE or RS485 half or full duplex and you can find the complete pinout here: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/routers/access/800/829/hardware/install/guide/b_IR829-HIG/b_IR829-HIG_chapter_01.html#con_1195004__

In some cases termination resistors should be placed ideally on both sides of the cable, Except for trivially short point to point connections.

To get access to that data ... it depends what to do. A very simple way is to configure reverse telnet, so that you can telnet back to the router and send/receive serial data in the telnet session. Check out here:

Hope this helps
