Activation Code or Service Domain

I am installing a Cisco IP 8811 series phone and I am getting a message that requests for an activation code or service domain. I am going to be using these phones with Vonage and their tech support doesn't know what this is.

How do I resolve this issue?

This has been asked many times before, you got a phone with enterprise FW and it's trying to use either MRA or an activation code you would generate on CUCM to register. The FW is meant to be used with Cisco call control.

If you wanted to use the device with a 3rd party provider you had to buy the 3PCC/MPP flavor of the device.

If this a brand new device, discuss with the seller swapping it for a 3PCC/MPP device.

Otherwise, your options are:

A) Use as is, plenty of threads in the community on how to register phones with enterprise FW to 3rd party PBX.

B) Buy the migration license to go from Enterprise to 3PCC/MPP firmware, all details at upgrade.cisco.com, thoroughly read the documentation and requirements if you choose this route.

Main difference is that with enterprise FW you will need to manually format all the configuration files the phone would expect from a Cisco call control with the proper values for your 3rd party PBX, while a phone with 3PCC/MPP FW will have a configuration GUI to enter all the details and customize a lot more things than with enterprise FW.

if this helps, please rate

can you give me a good link to the instructions how to set this up? I have been researching but haven't found anything particular.

Recommend you to use the search functionality in the community. As Java wrote this has been asked and answered many times.

By the sound of the behaviour of the phone you likely have enterprise software on the phone. To use the phone with a 3:rd party service, like Vonage your best option is to have MPP software on the phone or you could craft the needed configuration for the phone to operate with your 3:rd party service with the enterprise software. This is sort of a tedious and time consuming process, so you’ll be better off if you have MPP software on the phone.
