Does the phone talk back to a CUCM or 3rd party call manager?

No, there will not be connectivity between his home phone and cucm, but it is exclusively for his personal use.

What model of phone will this individual be using?
This can be done. I've posted a lot of responses regarding Cisco phones and Asterisk in this forum.

No, you must provide the information first.
1. Does the person have a voice service provider yet or not?
2. Will this voice service provide support Cisco phones?
3. Will the voice service provider support ALG?
4. Will the voice service provider support NAT?

What does ALG stand for?

Leo,
Please find the question from user below?
I have only 1 PSTN Analog line from STC (saudi arabia service provider), Panasonic regular phone to connect.
However is there a translator device such as ATA which can allow to receive and place calls from a cisco ?

Syed,
Let me explain this as simple as I can. Now I don't know what service STC provides, but one needs an internet service provider (ISP) to be able to surf the internet. Yes?
If one wants to connect an VoIP phone up for digital communication, then one must need a voice service provider (VSP). There are two methods how this can be achieve:
1. The phone can, independently, talk to the VSP (via the DSL modem); or
2. The phone can talk to an Asterisk server and the Asterisk server talks to the VSP.

There are several ATA that converts analogue to IP. Cisco ATA 121/122 is a good example.
