cucm and platforms it runs on

Hi every body.

I have few question about CUCM ver 8.0

Cisco Unified Communications Manager Version 8.0

Supported platforms:

• Cisco MCS 7800 Series Media Convergence Servers, including the Cisco MCS 7816, MCS 7825, MCS 7828, MCS 7835, and MCS 7845

•  Starting with Cisco Unified Communications Manager 8.0(2), Cisco UCS  B200 M1 - blade server and UCS C210 M1 - 2RU rack server; based on  market-leading VMware vSphere 4 (ESXi 4.0)

I have learned first cucm used to run windows 2000 server. Cisco now only supports CUCM that run on unix.

My question are all these supported platforms as mentioned above  unix based?

So UCM 5.0 onwards, Cisco moved to an appliance model where the OS and application came bundled on one DVD. The OS being used is RHEL (the version depends on the UCM version you are running). The OS is preconfigured and root access to it is not provided. Cisco TAC has the ability to generate a root password and log into the OS with root privileges if the need arises. Here is a nice link which shows which platforms support which version of UCM:

So the platforms you mentioned above dont come with the OS installed. Hope that answers your query.

Hi Sarah,

Yes thats correct. As for accessing the OS, you will have SSH access to the server, however, the privilege level will not be root access. The commands you will run will not be linux commands but customized commands which should let you do quite a bit of stuff with regards to the OS. As for application related config, you will have GUI access just like in the Windows versions, with a better look and feel to it.

Access to the Linux operating system (root, or superuser) and the database is no longer available in CUCM version 5.x and higher for end users. The more recent releases only offer a command line interface (CLI) with a limited command set for troubleshooting, including queries regarding system information or database information. The root access is reserved for the technical support from Cisco (TAC).

So all we have to do get that dvd containing particular cucm version , and install it on a compatible server and we are good to go

But as you said root access to OS is not provided, then how do we access cucm in such situation ?

Keep in mind that besides the DVD you will also need licenses, version 5.0 requires 2 license types:

  • node license - needed for every CUCM server running CallManager service in the cluster
  • DLU licenses - for devices, you can no longer purchase straight DLUs, but you can purchase UCL/CUWL user licenses

Keep in mind that unlike in Windows based CUCM all appliance based CUCM enforce the licensing.
