Greetings! Bear with me as I'm reletively new to the whole Linux app side of things. We upgraded to CuCm 8.5 and Unity connection 8.5 from version 4.0 (which was windows)
We've decided it's time to check for security patches / updates
We are avoiding any OS upgrades (Ver 9) and are focusing on small patches/updates. Could anyone point me in the right direction for these, or is it that the patches are just included in the OS upgrade(to ver 9)?

There are no separate OS and application patches, the updates that are posted for each version on CUCM will contain the app patches and the OS patches that the BU considered necessary.
That's the same for any other app over the Linux appliance, CUC, IM&P/CUPS, UCCX, etc
You cannot install Linux updates/patches directly (or anything else for that matter)

Jaime is spot on (+5), keep in mind that there are always follow up minor updates to each major version, i.e. version 8.5 might have 8.5SU1, SU2, etc, etc. There is also 8.6 train which from OS perspective is major as it upgrade Linux to Red Hat 5. In order to upgrade to major versions you need to ensure you have proper UCSS support for your system and request upgrade licenses/media via cisco PUT tool, also always consider software and hardware compatibility when planning an upgrade by reviewing release notes and upgrade guides.

Sure, if you do not want to upgrade to other version, i.e. 9.1.1a.
