Technically, Cisco doesn't support CIPC running SIP with CME. This is true up to the current release (from 8.6 release notes):
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cipc/8_5/english/release_notes/CIPC8x_RN.html#wp128657
Cisco IP Communicator Release 8.6 supports the following:
•Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express version 7.1 (nonsecured SCCP only)
I have heard that people have been able to get CIPC to register with CME as phone type 7970. This makes some sense given that when CIPC was first developed it was more or less built based on 7970 firmware. Though, I have not tested this behavior myself on CME.
HTH.

Bill
