IPV6 Tunneling mechanisms Vs NAT64/DNS64

Hi Team ,
I have gone through the tunneling concepts of IPV6 to IPV4 interoperability.

1. How does this Manual tunnel ,6to4 tunnel and ISTAP tunnels are different from NAT64/DNS64 concept.
2. I understand that NAT64/DNS64 will serve IPV6 only clients to communicate Ipv4 clients which means the initiation has to start from  IPV6  clients . What if IPV4 wants to initiate a session to communicate with IPV6 ? Are these tunneling concepts also serve the same thing ??
3. What does  dual stack mean in terms of IPV6 terminology.

Hi Shri,

1. Tunneling is the fact of transporting a protocol (ipv4 or ipv6) over another or the same protocol (ipv4 or ipv6). NAT64, on the other hand, is a translation from one protocol to the other (ipv4 becomes ipv6 or ipv6 becomes ipv4).

2. That is correct. NAT64/DNS64 is generally for IPv6 only clients wanting to access IPv4 only content. If you need to other way around you will need static mapping configuration on the NAT64 device.

3. Dual Stack in the context of IPv6 means running both protocols (ipv4 and ipv6) in a given host or network.

Thank you so much for the reply. Now it makes more sense to me of what i read in the document of nat64.

Could you please direct me to the link or any document which can help me to understand NAT64 /DNS64   of both IPV6 to IPV4  especially IPV4 to IPV6. Tried exploring google with no much luck

Also do we have any other mechanisms which will serve the purpose of same like NAT64/DNS64.
