Cisco 10Gb SFP+ over 5Gb physical link

I have a customer who is currently replicating storge over a 1Gb WAN between the two sites.  They are running out of bandwidth and are going to upgrade their 1Gb Fiber link from SP to 5Gb.  They have Cisco C-6816-X-LE line card and requested 10Gb SFP+ ZR module to support this configuration.  My understanding is that 10SFP+ only support 10Gb speed and nothing less.  To me, it is a mismatch beween the 10Gb SFP+ and actual line speed which is only 5Gb.

is there any alternative?

If the client wants to use 5 Gbps FC module then the switch needs to be a Nexus-family of switches.
