EIGRP as PE-CE protocol

Is there any limitation in hardware or IOS in implementing EIGRP as PE-CE protocol in a MPLS-VPN backbone ? I mean, we have all these models as PE equipment: Cisco 6506, Cisco 7606, Cisco 7609, Cisco 2800, Cisco 7513 and Cisco 7206; and these IOS distinct versions installed: 12.3(8)T11, 12.2(33)SRB3, 12.3(18), 12.2(18)S, 12.2(18)SXF, 12.2(33)SRB1, 12.3(10), 12.3(22a), 12.2(28a). Could there be any issue in implementing EIGRP as PE-CE protocol? Is it supported considering the IOS versions, and models mentioned?

Hello Hector,

you can check using feature navigator

www.cisco.com/go/fn

then search by feature

write EIGRP and search

select

MPLS VPN support for EIGRP between Provider Edge and Customer Edge

in the case of C7200 I tried to search (I guessed it is using 12.3(8)T11)

the system says first release is 12.3(17c)

for sure it is supported on C6506 with 12.2(18)SXF because we are using it and so also for 12.2(33)SRB1 on C7606.

for 12.2(18)S you can see that 12.2(25)S supports it there are good chances it is fine.

I have some doubts that 12.3(10) and 12.2.(28a) supports it

12.3(22a) can be fine

another way to see is to search in the command reference here it is a list of first releases to introduce the command address-family ip vrf

Release

Modification

12.0(22)S

This command was introduced.

12.2(15)T

This command was integrated into 12.2(15)T.

12.2(18)S

This command was integrated into 12.2(18)S.

12.2(27)SBC

This command was integrated into 12.2(27)SBC.

12.2(33)SRA

This command was integrated into Cisco IOS Release 12.2(33)SRA.

12.2SX

This command is supported in the Cisco IOS Release 12.2SX train. Support in a specific 12.2SX release of this train depends on your feature set, platform, and platform hardware.

Hope to help

Thanks Giusseppe, it was very helpful to check the Cisco FN, since I almost completed all the matrix. Now I only have the doubt about the 2800 (2811 model) provided it doesn't appear in the platform pull down menu of the feature navigator. Could it mean that the feature is limited by the platform in this case ? I think the only way out to know it is testing it in a lab...

Hello Hector,

you may need to move to 12.4 or better to 12.4T but it should be supported also on C2811.

However, it may be unsupported.

It should be easy to see if the feature can be configured or not with a test.

Hope to help

Giuseppe
