Assuming that you have a multihomed site with 2 CE routers connecting to different PEs?. How would you configure the network, given that BGP can not be used as the CE to PE protocol.

I will appreciate suggestions and inputs.

Howdy,

Why do you say that BGP cannot be used as the PE-CE protocol ? Is it because of the AS loop detection ? If that is your concern, then there are ways around that.

Pls refer to this conversation where I outlined some solutions to this issue:

Hope that helps - pls rate the post if it does.

Hello,

assuming BGP is not supported by the CE you could still use OSPF, EIGRP and static. RIPv2 will most likely create routing loop issues because of mutual redistribution into BGP on the PE.

OSPF would not create routing loop issues, because there are PE modifications (down bit) preventing it.

EIRP is somewhat more tricky but still can be achieved.

Static routing could be used towards the PE and redistribution into IGP behind CE routers.

From an SP point of view OSPF and EIGRP are not the most prefered options. EIGRP means Cisco PE. OSPF means using "a lot" of resources (CPU and memory) on the PE.

Static is always offered.

So check with your SP and choose one of the options.

Hope this helps! Please rate all posts.

Hi

Just completed testing on multihoming environment. But, it used BGP. Others, will be tested in future.

If you are trying to go with a light-weight routing protocol for CE-PE, I would use RIPv2. To prevent loops, just use an offset list on the CE to pad the link you would like to use as a backup.
