VPLS support on Cisco ASR 1001

Hello experts,

Could someone confirm if VPLS supported on Cisco ASR 1001. I found https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11199006/vpls-asr1001 but still I am not sure if  it is supported on this platform. I have several 1001 boxes on our network but none configured for VPLS service as we mostly use Juniper. So am planning to install ASR 1001 as PE and setup VPLS. Has anyone actually configured VPLS on this platform, what license I will need and has anyone configured VPLS between ASR1001 and Juniper MX boxes?

Any input appreciated.

Many Thanks

Hello Parves,

Yes, VPLS is supported on ASR1001 router and we have seen deployments between Juniper and Cisco as edge devices running VPLS.

The VPLS license is EULA and will become RightToUse after the evaluation period expires. This is mentioned here:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/asr1000/configuration/guide/chassis/csa_rtu.html

The Cisco ASR 1001 Router support technology package-based licenses that are not node locked. Technology packages and feature licenses are activated using evaluation licenses that are built in. Evaluation licenses are limited period-metered licenses that are valid for 60 days. When the time allowed for an evaluation license expires, the license is automatically upgraded to RTU license. After all  the RTU licenses are activated, there is no expiration of license and are valid for a lifetime.

Hope this answers your question.

Hello Vinit,

Thanks for a quick response. Following the configuration guide http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/ios-xml/ios/mp_l2_vpns/configuration/xe-3s/mp-l2-vpns-xe-3s-book/mp-vpls.html#GUID-A7459BA6-B67B-43F2-BB39-CDDAD197212E I am trying to configure VPLS on our ASR 1001 box and come across the situation where I am unable to create "service instance" under sub interface however I am able to create it under physical interface.

Can I confugure several VPLS services and other services e.g Internet access under single physical interface?

Many Thanks

Hello Parves

i dont think we can create service instance under sub-interfaces but only under physical interfaces or virtual interfaces like port-channel.

so you can configure xconnect under a service instance or under SVI and you can have bridge domain for service instances to run other services.

Thanks
