is VRF concept locally significant in MPLS network ?

or do we need to keep unique vrf name for all sites of company ABC TO WORK?

Can you more elaborate

I dont get your Q well

But

Vrf name you config in router in mpls is no matter

What matter is RD and route-target.

And RD prefer to be unique except one case multi homed CE where both RD from CE edge router must same

And for route-target it you can use same or different depend on your needing.

Hi @MHM Cisco World ,

And RD prefer to be unique except one case multi homed CE where both RD from CE edge router > must same

In a scenario where the CE is connected to two PE, you normally configured different RDs on the two PEs, so that the same prefixes received from the CE are propagated as different prefixes to other PEs in the network. This helps reduce the convergence time.

Thanks

Hello @knaik99,

Yes it is! But it's best practice to keep unique VRF names for different sites or customers, especially in larger networks or multi-site deployments. This approach ensures clarity, consistency, and helps avoid potential conflicts or confusion. Having unique VRF names makes it easier to manage and troubleshoot the network, as it provides clear identification of which VRF corresponds to which site or customer.

means Can we say that VRF name are locally important for that CE ?

But RD is also locally important Because I saw different RD CE which are communicating to each other via MPLS VPN?

main role is played by RT as per my understanding ---that we need to match ,right?

@knaik99

You are correct.

VRF names are locally significant for each CE device, as they help isolate the VPN routing instances.

RD is also locally significant and is used to distinguish routes when multiple CE devices in a MPLS VPN environment have overlapping IP addresses.

RT plays a crucial role in MPLS VPNs as it defines which routes should be imported or exported into a particular VRF, ensuring proper communication between different CE devices in the VPN. So, you are right that matching the appropriate RTs is essential for correct routing within the MPLS VPN network.

Vrf named is local and it dont have any role

Vrf rd not local and it have role to make preifx unique per mpls

Inside mpls prefix the prefix is seen as rd:prefix so it important

Vrf rt is important for export import prefix between vrf in same router or between routers in mpls.

means VRF is locally significant

2.RD & RT plays main role in sending traffic from one site to another

Right?

as per below post---

RD is locally significant---Can you please check?

Screenshot (1011).png

also the link you share I already mention that RD not local.

yes ,here we are seeing different RD for blue & Red VRF wrt all CE?

Sorry do get it can you elaborate

Same topolgy I share' write your vrf/rd you see it correct and together discuss each point.

as per discussion,RD should be unique across one VRF domain but here we are seeing two RD for VRF RED i.e. 1:100 & 1:200

and for VRF Blue ,we have two RD i.e. 2:100 & 2:200

In topolgy I mean it use same vrf name to know different'

And I mean it using 10.0.0.0 for different CE.

Now you say I use two RD for same VRF' but are PE is same ?
