Cisco ISE VM License and Smart Licensing

Overview:

We have a customer that will upgrade their software version from 2.2 to 2.6. And what they have are base, plus and apex licenses as well as their purchased VM license.

As I understand that moving from prior ISE 2.4 to 2.4 onwards for VM ISE, that they will have their VM license converted to the Small,Medium,Large VM license. This request for conversion is already done, however we have not yet generated the file as they have not started with the upgrade.

Customer wants to transition as well to Smart Licensing before upgrading their software version.

Questions:

1. Is Cisco ISE VM License included on Smart Licensing?

2. How do you convert traditional licensing (Base, Plus and Apex) licenses to smart licensing?

- do you need the previous PAK files for this?

3. If ISE VM License is included on the Smart Licensing, do we upgrade first the software version of the VM before changing it to Smart Licensing?

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Q1. Yes, VM license is included in smart license
Q2. Easiest option to open a case with the licensing team (from support
portal). Give them the serial numbers of your ISE nodes and license counts.
They will convert for you. Otherwise, you can do this from the portal. If
you go to a traditional licensing portal, you should see the PAKs already
used. There is an option to select the PAK and convert to smart licensing.
Q3. You can upgrade then convert to a smart license. In a worst case
scenario, you will get 90-days before running out of licenses.
