Good day,
Our work is using some 2960x and 3850 as Layer2 and Layer 3 switches. As there are some vulnerabilities in the old firmware we are checking in upgrading it to the latest release however by upgrading it, it will move to smart licensing.
What would happen if the evaluation period expired? Will the switches functioning as L3 will stop functioning and revert back to L2? or the switch will lose some features? Will it cause a memory leak due to nonstop logs indicating the evaluation is expired?

From my privious experience, nothing happens. Worst case you can see some logs related to license. However, if you eventually open a TAC, they can refuse to proceed with the troubleshooting until you fix the license.

Are your switches in L3 or in L2 operation? Thank you.

I had experience with both L2 and L3.

Both products coming to EoL, will cisco bother what you using, (i dont think so) as long as they working.
IOS version nor many of them have smart License. but some of the IOS device need PAK file to enable to License.
so make sure you have right PaK files to work as expected.

I see, these are old switches and will not be renewed/cannot be renewed. I saw some posts indicating that we will have issues if the 90day evaluation period expired especially for switches operating in L3(advance licenses) with valid pak file when upgraded to newer fw version using smart licensing.
If no negative impact for l3 switches and l2 switches, i think i'll test on another switch to make sure.
Is this same for old cisco routers also? Thank you
