cable console access

Hello,

This is a general question.

I always have used a serial-RJ45 cable to connect to the cisco devices through the console. I've got an old compaq armada laptop to do that. But now, I'm thinking about buying a new laptop and.. ¡The new laptops have NO serial ports!. So, how can I connect with them to the console port?

I have some adaptors to lpt ports but the hyperterminal (the soft I use to connect) doesn't recognize that port.

How do you connect to the cisco console port from a new laptop without serial port? which software do you run?

Maybe is a stupid question, but I don't know how to do it.

Thanks in advance.

Hello again,

Have you ever used the hyperterminal with an usb-to-serial adapter? I haven't. I have got one, but I haven't any driver to it.

Thanks in advance.

What OS are you using? Most of the newer operating systems recognize the USB/Serial Adapter and assign it a COM port (Windows) or /dev/ttyUSB (Linux/OS X).

I'm using both of them. Windows 2000 and linux slackware or debian.

So, when I plug the adapter, the system recognized it and assign a com port. Therefore, I can use the hyperterminal without problems.

Thanks in advance.
