Hello guys and thank you for the previous help and solutions. I need to upgrade ios remotely but my question is if i can use remote TFTP server to SSH to my switches with the images already on the remote TFTP server. I intend using the server on my PC but my job insisted on the one onsite, i guess for some security reasons. If is possible i will appreciate if you guys can share all the steps with clarity. Thank you i will appreciate the response ASAP upgrade due tomorrow morning.

yes it is possible to use a remote device for TFTP and upgrade.

Hope you are upgrading Lan switches, so you have still access to the remote Server? os is this server also connected to the same switch you trying to upgrade?

Thank you for your email. All the switches are LAN switch. And the TFTP
server is on same network with the switches.

yes you can use TFTP Server to download image and go ahead for upgrade,

upgrade rules :

1. take the config backup out of the box  always my advise.

2. read the relase notes and features work as expected on the target version.

3.write the config before upgrade take place.

Also not the the least, plan for backout plan in case any disaster.

if the device running more than years or more, reload before upgrade.

 - Possible as stated by Balaji , but for critical business devices it is always safer to be on site.

As the other posters have already noted, generally you can.

I've often used TFTP to copy IOS software between like devices at the same (remote) site.  Note, often, when so configured, many Cisco devices can be a TFTP server.

Hmm, unsure I can see a "security" reason for doing this, but as, generally, TFTP is "slow" across WAN links, local TFTP transfers are usually much, much faster.  For that reason, especially when doing remote site software upgrades, I generally use something like a FTP server.
