I have been tasked with configuring an ASA 5505, and i showing someone else how to use the java applet once i get it running. I am a bit new to this, but i want to learn.
The system, ideally, would be configured by me at home and then brought to the client to switch out the old (non-cisco) device. At home i have an ubuntu laptop and a mac mini. Neither has a serial port. I purchased a usb to serial cable, which i then connected to the serial to rj45 cable, and i now have a terminal session running on my laptop.
I connected the mac to port 8 on the 5505, the light is green both in back and in front of the 5505, but it did not assign the mac an ip address. The mac was set to use "Using DHCP". I changed it to "Using DHCP with manual address" and assigned it 192.168.1.50, but it did not seem to grab any more information from the device. So, i changed it to "Manually", gave it the same .1.50 address, subnet as 255.255.255.0, and Router set as 192.168.1.1. pinging 192.168.1.1 timesout.
How do i connect my mac (or my linux laptop) to the 5505, and how to i get the java applet running.

There are some things in your post that are not clear to me. You talk about using a usb to serial cable to connect to the ASA. It is not clear whether you have been successful logging in on that connection and whether you are able to execute commands on the ASA using that connection.
It is not clear whether the ASA you have is new equipment (with factory default configuration) or is previously used equipment which would have configuration different from factory default. If its configuration is not factory default that might explain why your mac is not receiving an IP address from DHCP when it connects. If you are able to execute commands on the ASA then do show running-config and post the output.
I believe that the java applet you mention is ASDM. Is that correct? If so then when you have solved the issue of how to connect your mac or laptop to Ethernet port and get IP address then you just use your browser to HTTPS to the IP assigned to the ASA.
