IOS packet capture on Cisco 2960 switches

Paul Morgan

Hi all,

Im trying to figure out if Im being dumb.

Im using various 2960 switches throughout the enterprise.

I can enter the commands for IOS packet captures in the same way as on my routers. But I never get any output. Im assuming this is because the switches are not enabled for CEF.

Is there any other way to get packet captures on these switches?

Commands used:

monitor capture buffer NAME circular

monitor capture point ip cef NAME all both

monitor capture point associate NAME NAME

monitor capture point start NAME

All help is appreciated before I set my switch cabinet on fire in despair.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul ,

Unfortunately the switches cannot use Embed packet captures as the Routers. Instead you can use a SPAN session to capture the traffic.Check an example below:

https://supportforums.cisco.com/document/13891/how-configure-port-monitoring-span-catalyst-2940-2950-2955-2970-3550-or-3750-series

Hope it helps

Wondering about if this is also true for higher-level switches ? I am having the same issue on a C 6880 like Paul...

Only port mirroring works on 6880 as well ?
