Jitter/Latency detection

I am having issues with a latency sensitive application and need to figure out if its network related so I am trying to see what my options are. I know IP SLA, but what results am I going to get from this? Is there an application I can run on each side (source and destination) to get better results?

Hi there,

Depending on the OS of the nodes at each end, iperf would be a good option to give you the metrics.

Ok thats what I was thinking iperf/jperf. I feel like IP SLA is more for reachability in most scenarios its configured.

IP SLA is a good tool. I once worked with a solution where it was configured to monitor a pretty sizable 'campus' network where there were concerns regarding VOIP performance. The SLA jobs were polled via SNMP and the results graphed in Opsview, it gave a good overview.

iperf is great, but there is no (easy) way to aggregate lots of results into a single dashboard for monitoring.

cheers,

Seb.

On our global network we use LA as a monitoring tool as we have IWAN running on top of transport network, its really good , its uses netflow and ip sla in the background , it actually pushes it out from the app to the routers what its requires and pulls all the stats and graphs them , you can run specific jitter reports , just an option
