The PI 3.0 quick start guide indicates there is no upgrade to 3.0 from 2.2 on Gen 1 physical appliances. How can one determine if a physical appliance is Gen 1? TIA

You could check your part number in show hardware/ show inventory , the gen 2 part id is PI-UCS-APL-K9 while gen 1 is PRIME-NCS-APL-K9

That restriction was changed with PI 3.0.2. You can (and I have) run PI 3.0.2+ on the Gen 1 appliance.
It will allow you to upgrade to 3.0 using the upgrade image. You should then update it to the latest version (currently 3.0.3 with Device Pack 4).
