ASA 5506 Toast?

Zaleon
Level 1
Level 1

So for whatever reason my ASA will not boot anymore. It just gets stuck in a reboot cycle and I'm thinking the flash may be completely crashed.

When it initially boots up it tries to boot but fails and the only option that works is to hit ESC to get into ROMMON as shown below.

If go into ROMMON and try to load a new image by USB or tftp, everything seems to go fine until it gets just past the license screen then it seems to crash and goes back to the reboot cycle with the following output below.

I would suggest to open a case with Cisco TAC in order to decode the traceback and check what can be done with the device.

Thanks for your reply GioGonza, but unfortunately that is not an option for me.

Hello,

Couple of things you can try since TAC is not an option:

1. Try to see if fsck flash: works in rommon mode, looks like the flash is corrupt. If fsck is not successful, try to format the flash.

2. Try to use a different image, could be a corrupt image as well.

AJ

Hi AJ, Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately the file system check command doesn't work in ROMMON, only the erase command. Go figure! I've tried multiple images from 9.4.x to 9.9.x, the same crash dump starts with the same error message regardless of version.

A possibility is that you might be hitting the Clock Signal Component failure bug

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/web/clock-signal.html#~overview

If this is the case there is not recovery from this and the ASA needs to be replaced

I thought that might be a possibility, but according to their serial# validation tool, this unit is not affected by that failure.

Don't know if you are still being affected by this, but I had a very similar experience with my 5506 after I "downgraded" it from the FTD image to the old ASA image.  I could use ROMMON mode to TFTP the image but I couldn't save the config and if it rebooted it would just go to ROMMON mode again.

I kept getting disk system errors:

File system not supported
Attempt autoboot: "boot disk0:"
File system not supported
boot: cannot determine first file name on device "disk0:"

What worked was TFTP'ing the ASA image, going through the initial config and then formatting the flash with the "format disk0:" command.  You'll need to re-upload the ASA image again but I was out of the boot-loop.

Hope it helps.

Just want to say thank you - I ran into the exact same issue when "downgrading" from FTD to ASA software.  Going through the whole process and then doing the flash format once in the ASA software worked like a champ.  Just a few extra software copies than expected...

Thanks! I had the exact same problem! This answer should be the "solved" answer!!

Also I get this when trying to view disk0:

rommon 3 > dir disk0:
File system not supported

I ran into this issue when I skipped step 9 of this guide:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/security/firepower/quick_start/reimage/asa-ftd-reimage.html#id_57458

Step 9

Install the ASA and ASDM images.

Booting the ASA from ROMMON mode does not preserve the system image across reloads; you must still download the image to flash memory. You also need to download ASDM to flash memory.

  1. Download the ASA and ASDM images (see Download Software) to a server accessible by the ASA. The ASA supports many server types. See the copy command for more information: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/security/asa/asa-command-reference/A-H/cmdref1/c4.html#pgfId-2171368.

  2. Copy the ASA image to the ASA flash memory. This step shows an FTP copy.

    copy ftp:// user: password@ server_ip/ asa_file disk0: asa_file

    Example:

    ciscoasa# copy ftp://admin:test@10.86.118.21/asa961-smp-k8.bin disk0:asa961-smp-k8.bin

  3. Copy the ASDM image to the ASA flash memory. This step shows an FTP copy.

    copy ftp:// user: password@ server_ip/ asdm_file disk0: asdm_file

    Example:

    ciscoasa# copy ftp://admin:test@10.86.118.21/asdm-761.bin disk0:asdm-761.bin

  4. Reload the ASA:

    reload

The ASA reloads using the image in disk0.

Unfortunately I can't even get to the ASA prompt as after the image is downloaded via ROMMON it fails when trying to boot for the first time (as shown in my original post).

Has anyone been able to make any headway on this issue? I'm having the same issue and like Joe, opening a TAC issue isn't an option for me at present either. This ASA 5506-X was functioning without any issues until recently. I purchased this one new. Upon receiving it I only connected it long enough to save a configuration to it, I then immediately unplugged it and set it on the shelf as a cold-spare. When I first plugged it in again, after a couple years on the shelf, it was rebooting in a loop as if it couldn't access the image on disk0: even though I could DIR disk0: and confirm that all the files were present and accounted for; and presumably readable. Whilst troubleshooting however, I made the decision to erase disk0: from ROMMON thinking I would be able to copy the files directly back to it. I immediately regretted that decision. Once erased, all subsequent access attempts have been met with the "File system not supported" message. I'm attaching my output in case anyone who hasn't experienced this issue firsthand would like to look at it.

As is likely evidenced by the incessant fervor with which I have been, and sadly must continue, butting my head against this issue, my primary ASA bit the dust almost 48 hours ago now so, my network is down until I am able to find a way around this issue. So, any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, or even admonishments would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if there is anything else it would help to see posted. I will gladly make any additional information available.

Thank you all for the information you've already provided herein; and in advance for any additional help I'm optimistically holding out hope some of you may yet be willing to offer. ;-)

Cheers!

If you get to it, and you can't do it....? There you jolly well are, aren't you!

Hi,

I had this exact same issue and found this thread.  TAC is also not an option for me as my device is not covered.   As a last-ditch effort, I decided to take it apart and reseat everything that could be reseated.  The only things removable from the motherboard were the battery and the SSD.  After putting everything back together, it booted up.  I believe it was most likely the battery that solved the issue, but since the issue is gone I can't reproduce to narrow down which component actually solved the problem.    Hope this helps.
