Can't upload .tar file to upgrade FTD

I am trying to upgrade an FTD that is not connected to an FMC.  When I try to upload the .tar file with the upgrade, it tries to upload for several seconds and then errors out with the following error:

"The method could not be performed on the resource because the server is unable to store the representation needed to successfully complete the request"

There is 6GB of free space on the disk, based on 'dir flash:' in the diagnostic-cli.

what is the model of FTD , what is code running, what code you trying to upgrade ?

FTD you can use FDM also to upgrade.

This is a virtual FTD.

Currently on 6.7.0.2-24

Upgrading to 7.2.5-208
