The 5550 is rate at 1.2 Gbps. But that througput is split between the 2 interface busses right? Actual throughput is 600 Mbps for slot 0, and another 600 Mbps for slot 1?

Yes, you are correct.
For example, if you connect both inside and outside interfaces to one slot (one bus), you might get around 600M throughput.
But if you connect inside and outside interface to two different slot (two buses) respectively, you can get about 1.2G
