Intial Setup for FirePOWER module, where to start

LJ Gabrillo

Hi Everyone,

Asking for your help again, first of, I already read a ton of guide on how to initial setup i.e., prime the FirePOWER module so that's covered.

Recently, one of our clients purchased a new ASA with FirePOWER services, all is well and good, until I saw this on the Bill-of-Materials, it has SF-FP5.3.1-K9.

As far as I know, we the admins are the one who will prime the device e.g, through bootstrap and OUR desired system software.

My question is, do I really need to start from v5.3.1? or can I just jump ahead to 5.4? e.g., upload bootstrap 5.4 and sys software 5.4
Note this is a new fresh-from-the-box-with-the-smell-of-cisco ASA ^_^

Hi LJ,

In that case you can directly upgrade to 5.4 as it does not have any configuration.

Hi RJ,

In order to upgrade the SFR module to 5.4.0.1 from 5.3.1 you have to upgrade the SFR to 5.4 from 5.3.1(intermediary step). From 5.4 only you can upgrade to 5.4.0.1.

But make sure that your defense center is in 5.4 or later before upgrading your SFR module.

Hi Aditya,

Thanks for the reply,
But note this is a very new installation, nothing has been installed yet. The ASA hasn't been even turned on for the 1st time yet.
Basically, we just opened the ASA box just now,

I am just asking If can prime the device directly to 5.4 or do i need to install 5.3.1 first?

Hi LJ,

In that case you can directly upgrade to 5.4 as it does not have any configuration.

Aditya
