We are planning to operate the 3105 FTD firewall without FMC.
Is it possible to use FDM without FMC?
If so, what are the limitations of FDM?

That 2017 slide is a bit outdated. You can now do HA, port channels, SSL and Identity polices etc. using FDM.
FMC (on-prem or cloud-delivered) is still recommend for most customers however. You can migrate FDM 7.2+ to FMC later using the Migration Tool. This did not used to be possible.

Is it possible to use FDM without FMC?
YES / NO depends on the requirement and environment you managing the (devices)
what are the limitations of FDM?
Many features improved in 7.X onwards also in 7.3 for FDM (that does not mean it replace 100% FMC).
Chcek what features you looking to use - based on that made decison ( my view FMC or Cloud one is best option).
