ASDM, a browser-based, Java applet that you use to configure and monitor the software on security appliances. ASDM is loaded by the adaptive security appliance, and enables you to configure, monitor, and manage the device.

smahbub: that's a direct cut-and-paste from the first two sentences of ASDM 6.0 User Guide
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa80/asdm60/user/guide/intro.html
...and it doesn't really answer the original poster's question.
