Passing Multicast through a Pix

I have quite a simple set up. But for the life of me I cannot see why a rule keeps blocking my multicast traffic.

(Addressing is made up)

In essence I have one server that has a unicast address of 172.30.1.1/24 and it is multi-casting out on 234.1.1.1

the rule says : -

permit udp 172.30.1.1     234.1.1.1

The more I look at the rule, the more it looks wrong, but I don't know why - if that makes any sense ..

Is there a special way to write a rule to allow multicast traffic through ?

Bets Regards

Mike

PIX in routed mode does not support multicast passthrough. Only in transparent mode, multicast passthrough is supported.

Hope that answers your question.

Thanks Jennifer

Can you run a Pix in  both Transparent and Routed mode ?

I have other "normal" routed sessions going on through the firewall and through the same interface as it happens.

Mike

No, unfortunately you can't run the PIX in transparent and routed mode at the same time. You can only run one at the time.
