my customer have a pix 515R. Can i upgrade the software using the 6.3 software from a pix 515UR?

one good thing about pix is that the code is the same to all models upto v6.x, thus the same image can be installed on multiple pix regardless the model.
however, v7 is a different story since it doesn't support pix501 and pix506e.

I do not know if it is possible to downgrade a PIX but it is possible to UPGRADE from an R to an UR.
Send an Email with a < show version > to licensing@cisco.com or contact your local cisco vendor where you purchased the product.

iam not trying to upgrade the lisencing..am just trying to upgrade the software.

R devices are physically different than UR ones.
There is twice more memory on UR.
There is a VPN accelerator card on UR.
So you have to :
- pay for a memory upgrade
- pay for a VPN accelerator
- pay for the license upgrade
Then you will have an UR.
Note that the VPN accelerator is not mandatory, especially if you do not use IPSec
