DOCSIS Automation using IAP and NSO in VMO2

Shankhanil Chowdhury | Enterprise Architect

Divesh Gokool | Lead Automation Developer

Abstract

Virgin Media O2 offers consumers broadband, TV, and phone services on DOCSIS technology (Internet over Cable).

In this session, we will learn how VMO2 uses NSO and Itential Automation Platform to automate use cases like DOCSIS. Automation is a journey. To motivate the investment, you need to understand where you are and where you want to be. Like many other companies, VMO2 relied on people-centric and fragile processes including config in excel spreadsheets, multiple data sources, and tools, and field engineers were heavily reliant on backend engineers for the configuration.

Now with a very small and efficient team of 2 developers during 4 Sprints (4 Months) they are able to

  • Automated Provisioning of DOCSIS service on Target CMTS device/s

  • Allow Network Designers to define Frequency plans and parameters in a consistent, version-controlled, error-free manner

  • Decouple Backend and Field Engineer and allow field engineer to SELF SERVE

  • Central repository of Network Service Configuration in NSO

  • Ensure consistent network configuration across the estate, eliminate human errors, improve security and ease audits of the network.
