Hi
I use the free edition of OpenDNS (one that blocks adult content) on my kids computers.
I have noticed that it breaks Windows update (using Windows 10 from Europe, so Windows Update probably hits European servers). I get "Unable to connect to windows update server, please try later" or something close to it on both computers.
If I switch to Google DNS (8.8.8.8) and restart computer it works. Switching back to OpenDNS, breaks Windows update again. The issue has been present since I started using the service (past 6 months)
Is this known limitation of the free edition, or some error? Can something be done about the issue?
Working Windows update is a must and not updating kids computers is as dangerous as not blocking content.
Thanks

Well, I'm located in Europe too and have two, sometimes more, Windows 10 computers and did not face any related problems. It's not a known limitation but can be a user error (i.e. your error). Could it be that you blocked the related domains by accident with your dashboard settings?
Check at https://dashboard.opendns.com/stats/all/blockeddomains and unblock or whitelist these domains as needed. These are especially subdomains of windowsupdate.com, windows.com, microsoft.com.akadns.net and microsoft.com which you should never block by your settings if you run any Windows computers in your network, no matter what version, and want to make use of their updates.

Hi rotblitz
I'm using OpenDNS Family Shield with following nameservers:
There is no dashboard. Full description here:

Can you confirm that windows update actually works with these nameservers?
Thanks

I believe so unless another OpenDNS user has your current IP address registered and has domains blocked being needed for Windows Update to work.
