I need to install a Cisco CIIE-2000-4TS-L into a flameproof enclosure for underground coal mining in Australia.  The Australian standard ( AS/NZS 60079.0 clause 6.6.2 states

6.6.2 Lasers or other continuous wave sources

NOTE The values for Ga, Gb, and Gc can be found in IEC 60079-28.

The output parameters of lasers or other continuous wave sources of electrical equipment of

EPL Ma or Mb shall not exceed the following values:

  • 20 mW/mm2 or 150 mW for continuous wave lasers and other continuous wave sources,

and

  • 0,1 mJ/mm2 for pulse lasers or pulse light sources with pulse intervals of at least 5 s.

Question

Does the laser installed in this product exceed these values and is it possible to get a data sheet reference for verification to the testing authority we are dealing with.

Your assistance is much appreciated

Regards

Sam Western

The best way to request this info your local Cisco CAM and he will redirect it to Product Line Manager of R&S team.

Thanks I have done that as well :)

Continuous wave lasers are used in fiber optic networking, so you only have to be concerned with the first bullet.

150 mW is the same as +21.7 dBm.  Commercial pluggable (SFP, XFP) fiber-optic laser transmitters don't exceed +5 dBm (and are typically at +1 dBm or less).  As long as you're not aggregating multiple signals and amplifying them with DWDM you will be fine.

There are no lasers in the switch when you buy it.  The lasers are part of the SFPs that you may or may not use.  The max Tx power of the highest power SFP 1000BASE-ZX is +5 dBm, which is the same as 3.16 mW.

You'll be fine.  You probably need multiple data sheets for evidence.  You'll need one showing the SFPs that the switch can use, and you'll need the data sheets for those SFPs.  The SFP data sheet is hyperlinked above.
