Is it a must to have a third hard drive when upgrade CCM3.3 to CCM4.12 or just a safe way and may not need it?

No it is not a must. I have the default MCS 7835 with only 2 drives. I used a 1GB usb drive to transfer some of the recent patches. One valuable lesson is to make sure you remove the USB drive before the server reboots or it will hang,

Yeah - it's just to give you a back out plan.. if it's a lab environment or whatever then you needn't worry too much...
