Greetings,
I've done some poking around on the topic but am still unsure how the call gets passed from existing vm to unity with two switches in the middle. for example
phone mail----siemens 300E----H323gateway------CCM-------Unity
does phone mail dial a unity port directly? or do I set up an extension for AMIS out of my route plan. If the latter how do I get CCM to recognize the number if no device is associated. voice cards are not an option for this scenario. thanks for any info.

Phone mail is just going to dial the phone number that rings a Unity port directly from one of it's analog lines... when Unity picks up the first thing it'll hear is a blast of DTMF that indicates to us 'hey dummy! this is an inbound AMIS call!' and then Unity spits back that it can accept AMIS calls and the dance of identification and message transmition begins. The call can come in on any Unity port, doesn't matter.
