The 3550 supports both the cisco pre-standard poe and IEEE 802.3af. So it should work.
In the official course (the exam is based on that), 7965 ip phones are used. although the 7960 is an old type model, it's still fine to practice. If you want to buy some more on eBay I would try to get some 7962 or 7965. When practicing all these phone features you need a couple of phone-buttons so I wouldn't buy 794x phones.
For your 2801 you need PVDMs and you should also look for an FXS-card to attach an analog phone.
And if you want to practice with CUE, then you need an AIM2-CUE. But these are still quite expensive on ebay, so I would skip that in the preparation.
And don't forget a VMware-host for the VMs running CUCM, CUC and CUPS.
If all this is too much effort to build your own lab, then you can rent labs with this equipment at vendors like INE or IPexpert.

Hi Ron,
Just wanted to add one note to the great tips from my friend Karsten (+5 sir!)
We used to run a whole campus of 3550's and you can power 7942/62's if you
run this command on the switch ports;
5. config t
6. inter fa0/x
7. power inline delay shutdown 20 initial 300 (hit enter)
Cheers!

Hi Sir Karsten,
Thank you for a very concise & clear answer. I''ll check 7960 & fxs card in our local store.
Sir I'm a little bit confused on reading articles about 3550 poe details.
Other says it support 802.3af & othes says it only support in-line.. please advise. Is 3550 poe enough for cisco ccna - ccnp voice or should I get 3560 or 3750 which is a little bit pricey.
Thank you very much Sir.

I also referenced the official documentation with the 802.3af-support ... Sadly my 3550s don't have PoE, then I could have tested it with a 7965G/7975G which per documentation only support af.
And now to something completely different, Ron and Rob: With "Sir" I feel really old (ok, I am over 40, but still I don't want to feel that old ... )
