Does it work?

Recently a guy talked to me and tried to sell a device which implements VoIP. He said, if I plug in this device with my ADSL Internet connection and regular phone at home, I can make a long distance call through the Internet without any call charge.

Is it true?

This is possible, but was he going to be your voice service provider. In my mind if this were to work you would have to send the calls to somewhere. Do you know if you were sending the calls to his equipment and then he was routing the call. If he was just selling you the box and nothing else I don't think it would work. You have to be able to send the calls somewhere.

Thank you,

No, he is not the voice service provider. That is what I doubt: the device can translate voice to data, then to my Internet provider, if the provider doesn't do special things for voice, how can the voice reach another phone?

Thanks, Mckee.
