I have a customer who needs to integrate an avaya IP PBX with CM4.0 over a LAN. Customer wants to make use of the H323 fast start functionality within the Avaya PBX . Can this be done via the LAN ( as customer has been advised that the CM supports H323 fast start) or do we need to use a voice gateway via with an E1 connection to the PBX

You don't need a voice gateway. Configure the Avaya IP PBX as a H323 gateway in the callmanager. You should be having similary config in Avaya; I don't know what it is. That should get you going.

Not as simple as this.
The Definity does not support slow start calls on H.323. Call manager 4.0 and below can not make Faststart, and the definity is not backwards compatible.
Therefore even if you set the call manager as faststart inbound (service parameters -> call manager) you can only receive calls inbound, outbound calls to the definity will not establish a media stream.
Call Manager 4.1 supports faststart outbound, this shuld solve the problem.
