Help Needed for Setting Up A Home IP Telephony Solution

I want to buy a Cisco IP Telephony Solution (8 phones), but don't know what I really need to order. Is it necessary to buy and install a dedicated Media Convergence Server, or is it possible to run Cisco CallManager on a regular Windows XP PC too? How has the phone line to be connected to the system? Does it plug in the Media Server or PC, or is another device necessary to integrate the network with a regular phone line. Which kind of phone line is necessary: analog line, DSL, ISDN...? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

For a deployment with 8 phones I would strongly recommend the Cisco CallManager Express instead, please see http://www.cisco.com/go/ccme for further information.

The phone line in with a CCM- (or CCME for that matter) solution connects to the IP-network via a voice-enabled router.

The CallManager does ONLY run on MCS's or a few specific HP/IBM-servers.

You could use either ISDN or analog line(s), depending on the router configuration.

Best regards,
